Redwings Horse Sanctuary was established in 1984 and today has grown to be the largest horse charity in the UK, working to save horses, ponies, donkeys and mules whose future would otherwise be bleak. Every year we provide a safe, secure home for rescued animals who, through no fault of their own, have fallen upon difficult times and are in great need of our help and care. Many suffer as the result of ignorance but others are the victims of deliberate neglect or cruelty. Whatever their story, we do everything within our power to help them. The Charity’s base, which is in Norfolk, includes our specialist veterinary team and equine hospital, welfare team, equine reception, rehabilitation and rehoming teams and administration. We merged with the Ada Cole Memorial Stables in Essex in October 2005 and have Visitor Centres in Norfolk, Essex and Warwickshire, reflecting our nationwide remit. In a typical year Redwings seeks to positively intervene in the lives of around 2,400 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. This figure is made up of 1,200 needing specialised sanctuary care, investigations into the care and welfare of 700 horses, the admission of approximately 200 to the Sanctuary’s Equine Centres, the rehabilitation of up to 175 with behavioural problems and the provision of a caring foster home for 125 horses with the potential for life outside the Sanctuary. Our primary purpose is to provide and promote the welfare, protection and care of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that have suffered from maltreatment, neglect or poor circumstance. Our work has three main themes – rescue and rehabilitation, specialist sanctuary care and prevention through education. To read more about us, click on the newsletter (above left) to read our latest Supporter Newsletter.
